Erin Manning over at the Crunchy Con Blog has an interesting post on the allure of the latest techo-gadgets and their ultimate impact on our ability to relate communally. She concludes by observing,
We can’t acquire a sense of community with our faces intent on the pocket-sized screen in the palm of our hands. We can’t admire the unexpected beauty of a robin’s song when the pellet-shaped buds in our ears deafen us to his presence. We can’t experience even a moment of peace, when the voice on the other end of the line constantly demands our attention, our focus, our energy.
We can’t appreciate life, if all we are doing is entertaining ourselves to death.

America’s Top 40: Book Edition November 16, 2007

Dr. John F Murray is a licensed clinical and sport performance psychologist in Palm Beach, Florida. People on Dr. John F. Murray’s list were asked to select their 3 favorite books of all time. There were over 1000 responses in the initial round which remained open for two weeks and involved a series of four waves of emails. Then another survey was sent around for the final round of selections over a three day period. Readers were asked to review the initial list of top 78 books and to choose 3 books from that list, but to only retain one of their previous three choices. Out of this response we arrived at the Top 20 Books of All Time, ranked in order of popularity. Since 20 is a very small number, and many top books were close behind that did not make the final list, and even a few write-in choices kept occurring frequently even though they were not part of the original 78, it was decided to list an additional Top 20 in a category called Honorable Mention.People on Dr. John F. Does The Golden Compass point true North? November 14, 2007
Posted by Paul Edwards in The Golden Compass.9 comments
The Golden Compass is the first book in Philip Pullman’s fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials. New Line Cinema is set to release their movie based on the book on December 7, just in time for the holiday movie going season. As Ken Myers, host and producer of the Mars Hill Audio Journal, has noted, “In an interview with a Washington Post reporter in 2001, Philip Pullman candidly remarked, ‘I’m trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief.’ It’s ironic that the makers of The Golden Compass hope their film will make more money by opening in the season of the birth of the One who is the basis of Christian belief.”
There has been no small stir among Christian conservatives, led by William Donahue of the Catholic League, in denouncing as “pro-atheist” both the movie and the book upon which it is based. But are we overreacting?
During the first full hour of Wednesday’s program we sought to answer that question. We heard from Philip Pullman via excerpts of interviews he conducted with Al Roker of NBC’s Today Show, as well as an interview Mr. Pullman sat for with Donna Freitas, the author of both the book and film Killing the Imposter God.
For an indepth look at the philosophy and atheistic worldview of Philip Pullman we turned to the perspective of Alan Jacobs. Dr. Jacobs is a Professor of English at Wheaton College and is widely respected as an authority on fantasy genre, in particular the works of C. S. Lewis. Dr. Jacobs sat in 2000 for an extended interview with Ken Myers of the Mars Hill Audio Journal where they discussed Philip Pullman’s trilogy His Dark Materials in detail.
On Thursday’s program we once again take the full hour to return to a consideration of Philip Pullman’s work, this time focusing on the specific plot elements he uses to present his atheistic world view. Stream the program from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm EDT.

Huckabee’s “Gol-l-l-eee-y” Problem November 12, 2007

Could it be that the reason Mike Huckabee isn’t endearing himself to social conservatives is because he is a Baptist? And not just any kind of Baptist but a Southern Baptist - in every sense of the word? Is there a Baptist bias at work against the Huckabee campaign?
Steve Hays over at Triablogue wonders aloud if Baptist bias is at work:
Why is it that so many Evangelical leaders are endorsing the Mormon candidate rather than the Baptist candidate?
Of course, we know their stated reasons, but there may also be an unspoken reason. To be tactless, Romney is Camelot to Huckabee’s Gomer Pyle. I’m not saying that this comparison is the least bit fair. I’m just suggesting that it may be the elephant in the room.

A Cogent Defense of Penal Substitution November 4, 2007
Posted by Paul Edwards in Emergent, Emergent Church, Emerging Church, John MacArthur, John Piper, Penal Substitution.7 comments
“The doctrine of penal substitution states that God gave Himself in the person of His Son to suffer instead of us the death, punishment and curse due to fallen humanity as the penalty for sin.” So begins the cogent defense of the timeless doctrine of the penal substitutionary atonement provided by the death of Jesus Christ in Pierced for Our Transgressions: Rediscovering the Glory of Penal Substitution by theologians in the UK Steve Jeffery, Michael Ovey, and Andrew Sach.
The above statement stands at the heart of the gospel, which is why it is hard to believe that anyone who calls themself an “evangelical” would raise a disenting voice against it, yet those disenting voices are numerous, as the authors point out. The gospel is under attack from within the church. Much of the emerging church movement is a Trojan horse concealing pastors and theologians who purport to be a part of historic evangelicalism. In the name of cultural relevance they are prepared to denude the gospel of its essential distinctive - the bloody, sacrificial death of the God-Man - on the basis that people outside of the faith “don’t get it.” People outside of the faith have never gotten it ( see 1 Corinthians 1,2).
In offering their defense, the authors ground their thesis in both Scripture and history. Much of the historic defense of the doctrine of penal substitution is to be found in theological journals, dissertations, and lengthy systematic theologies. Pierced for Our Transgressions brings the best of the defense of the doctrine together in one very easy to read book. After thoroughly establishing the basis of penal substitution in Scripture, the authors relate the doctrine to the context of systematic theology generally, demonstrating its foundational position to all that we believe theologically.
Having established the theological framework for the doctrine, the authors display it in its historic context in the writings of of the Church Fathers, the Puritans, and contemporary theologians.
The most valuable aspect of the work, however, is the direct and practical way in which the authors interact directly with the objections raised to the doctrine of penal substitution in our contemporary theological context. Taking six broad categories of the debate (penal substitution and the Bible, the culture, violence, justice, the understanding of God, and the Christian life), the authors frame 26 objections offered by those who hold a dissenting view of penal substitution, dealing scripturally and historically with each (i.e., “The violence involved in penal substitution amounts to ‘cosmic child abuse,’ Penal substitution relies on biblical words, metaphors and concepts that are outdated and misunderstood in our culture,” “Penal substitution is not important enough to be a source of division”).
The book is a theologically saturated pastoral response to the critics of penal substitution. It is not a polemic with heated rhetoric aimed at individuals or groups. It is a cogent response to a heresy that has been fought since the early days of the church. It is an indispensable weapon in our arsenal as we continue to fight the skirmishes of the truth war.
