Certainly all Red Sox fans remember what happened on the night of October 25, 1986 as Boston was on the verge of winning its first World Series since 1913. Bill Buckner allowed a routine grounder to pass through his legs at first base, allowing the winning run in the 10th inning against the Mets and forcing a Game 7 which the Mets also won.

Buckner’s life hasn’t been the same since that night. A few days after committing that fateful error a local Boston sportscaster reported: “Bill Buckner tried to commit suicide today. He jumped in front of a train but it went through his legs.” He and has family were the butt of jokes and even received death threats.

That was 1986. This is 2008, When Boston opened its 2008 season (the Tigers were in town), Buckner was honored by throwing out the first pitch. It was more than routine:

If they had not won their titles he still would be demonized. Boston fans are very unforgiving.

Redemptive. Very classy.

The Mets have asked Buckner to throw out the first pitch every year for the past 20.
